Frequently asked questions
Everything you’ve wondered about buying your own HVAC equipment and having it professionally installed. Don’t see your question? Ask us.
The basics
What does My AC Dude do differently?
We install HVAC equipment that homeowners buy themselves. Traditional companies make much of their profit by marking up equipment, which is why most refuse to install a unit you purchased. We only charge for installation, so you can buy equipment at retail and save the markup, often thousands of dollars.
Will you really install equipment I bought myself?
Yes, that’s our specialty. As long as the equipment is new, properly sized and compatible with your home, we’ll install it. We strongly recommend a free equipment approval before you buy.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Greater Houston, including Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, The Woodlands, Spring, Pearland, Pasadena, League City, Humble, Tomball and surrounding communities. Not sure if you’re in our area? Contact us.
Do you work on commercial buildings?
We focus on residential homes and light-commercial split systems similar in size to residential equipment. Contact us with details about your project and we’ll let you know if it’s a fit.
Buying equipment
Where should I buy my equipment?
Anywhere reputable that sells new equipment to homeowners. See our suggested retailers for a few good places to start. Avoid used, refurbished or “open box” equipment and unknown marketplace sellers.
How do I know what size system to buy?
Don’t just match your old unit; it may have been sized wrong to begin with. Proper sizing considers square footage, insulation, windows, layout and our hot, humid climate. Send us your details and we’ll confirm the right size as part of your free approval.
What exactly should I order?
Typically a matched outdoor unit and indoor unit (coil, air handler or furnace), plus any accessories the manufacturer requires. When we approve your equipment we’ll give you a specific list so nothing is missing. We supply the installation materials: pad, disconnect, whip, drain components, refrigerant and so on.
What if I already bought the wrong equipment?
Contact us right away. If it’s still within the retailer’s return or exchange window, we’ll help you figure out exactly what to swap it for. Leave the boxes sealed if you can.
Can you recommend a brand?
Yes. Since we don’t sell equipment, our recommendations aren’t tied to any manufacturer. We’ll suggest options at different price points based on reliability, parts availability, warranty and your budget.
Warranty & licensing
Does buying my own equipment void the manufacturer warranty?
Usually not, but it varies by brand and retailer. Some manufacturers reduce warranty coverage on equipment sold online or require installation by a licensed contractor and registration within a set time (often 60–90 days). We check these terms during approval, install by a licensed technician, and help you register your warranty.
Do you warranty your installation?
Yes. Our workmanship is covered by a labor warranty on the installation itself. The equipment is covered by the manufacturer’s parts warranty. Details are included in writing with your quote.
Who handles a warranty claim if a part fails?
Manufacturer parts warranties cover the part itself. If a covered part fails, we can diagnose the issue, obtain the warranty part through the proper channel and replace it. Labor for warranty part replacement after our workmanship warranty period is billed at our standard rates, and we’ll tell you the cost upfront.
Are your technicians licensed and insured?
Yes. Our work is performed by Texas-licensed air conditioning and refrigeration technicians, and we carry liability insurance. Our license number is listed at the bottom of every page: Texas ACR License #TACLA00000000C.
Do you pull permits?
Yes. Where your city requires a permit for HVAC replacement, we pull it and schedule the inspection. The permit fee is included in your quote.
Installation
How long does an installation take?
Most AC or heat pump replacements are completed in one day. Full system replacements and installs that require duct, electrical or venting changes may take one to two days.
How soon can you install?
Once your equipment has been delivered, we’ll schedule your install at the earliest available date, often within a few days. In peak summer, book as early as possible. Approve your equipment before you buy so we can line up a date while it ships.
What happens to my old equipment?
We safely recover the refrigerant as required by EPA regulations and haul away your old equipment. It’s included in your quote.
What do I need to do to prepare for install day?
Make sure we have clear access to the outdoor unit location and the indoor unit (attic, closet or garage), keep pets secured, and leave the equipment boxes sealed until we arrive. If the equipment shipped with any paperwork, keep it handy for warranty registration.
Can you install a DIY mini-split I bought?
Yes. We install DIY and pre-charged mini-split kits as well as traditional ductless systems. See our mini-split installation page.
Pricing & payment
How much does installation cost?
It depends on the system and your home: type and size of equipment, indoor unit location, line set, electrical and ductwork. We provide a flat-rate written quote after reviewing your project. See our pricing page for typical savings.
How much can I save by buying my own equipment?
Homeowners commonly save $2,000 to $5,000 or more on a full system compared with traditional all-in quotes. The bigger the system, the bigger the potential savings.
Is the equipment approval really free?
Yes. Reviewing your equipment and giving you an install quote is free with no obligation.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. Your quote includes installation labor, standard materials, permit and haul-away. If we discover something that wasn’t in the original scope, we’ll explain it and get your written approval before doing any extra work.
Found a system you like? Let’s make sure it’s the right one.
Send us the link before you buy. A licensed tech will confirm sizing, compatibility and warranty terms, then give you a flat-rate written install quote. Free, no obligation.
