How it works

A smarter way to replace your AC, without the markup

We separate the two things traditional HVAC companies bundle together: the equipment and the installation. You buy the equipment at retail. We do what we’re best at, a licensed, by-the-book install.

My AC Dude technician helping homeowners choose HVAC equipment
Step by step

From “which unit?” to cold air in four steps

1

Tell us about your home and your system

Fill out our equipment approval form. The more we know, the better we can guide you. Helpful details include:

  • Square footage, number of stories and where your indoor unit lives (attic, closet or garage)
  • Photos of your current outdoor unit, indoor unit and their data plates (the sticker with model and serial numbers)
  • Whether you heat with gas or electric, and any rooms that are always too hot or cold

For a full replacement, we may schedule a quick on-site visit to measure, check your ductwork and electrical, and look at the install location.

2

We approve (or recommend) your equipment

Send us links or model numbers for the system you’re eyeing, or ask us for a few good options at different price points. A licensed technician reviews everything for:

  • Sizing: the right tonnage for your home. Oversized systems short-cycle and leave you humid; undersized ones never catch up.
  • Matching: outdoor and indoor units that are designed and AHRI-certified to work together.
  • Efficiency & code: meets current SEER2/HSPF2 minimums for our region, and makes sense for your budget.
  • Compatibility: fits your existing ductwork, electrical, thermostat and space.
  • Warranty: the manufacturer and retailer terms for homeowner-purchased equipment.

You get a clear thumbs-up (or a better suggestion) plus a flat-rate written install quote, usually within one business day.

3

You buy direct from the retailer

Order from any reputable retailer you like. Check our suggested retailers if you’re not sure where to start. You pay their price, keep the receipt in your name, and have it shipped to your home. We’ll tell you exactly what to order and what we’ll bring, so nothing is missing on install day.

When it arrives, inspect the boxes for shipping damage before signing, then let us know so we can lock in your install date.

4

Our licensed technicians install it right

We pull the permit, remove your old system, and install your new one to code and to the manufacturer’s specifications. That means nitrogen-purged brazing, pressure testing, a deep vacuum and a verified refrigerant charge, not just “hook it up and go.”

Before we leave, we commission the system, walk you through the thermostat, clean up and help you register your manufacturer warranty.

Install day checklist

What you buy vs. what we bring

Equipment comes from the retailer. Installation materials come from us and are included in your flat-rate quote.

You purchase

  • Outdoor unit (condenser or heat pump)
  • Matching indoor unit (evaporator coil, air handler or furnace)
  • Any accessories we specify (heat kit, TXV, etc.)
  • Thermostat (optional, we can recommend one)

We bring & install

  • Equipment pad, disconnect & electrical whip
  • Copper line set or line set flush, as needed
  • Drain line, drain pan & safety float switch
  • Refrigerant top-off, brazing & nitrogen
  • Permit, startup, commissioning & haul-away

Questions about the process

What if I already bought my equipment?

No problem. Send us the model numbers and we’ll confirm it will work for your home. If something doesn’t match, we’ll tell you right away so you can exchange it, ideally before it ships or while it’s still within the return window.

How long does an installation take?

Most straightforward AC or heat pump change-outs take one day. Full system replacements with a new furnace or air handler, or homes needing duct or electrical changes, can take one to two days. We give you a time estimate with your quote.

Do I need to be home during the install?

We ask that an adult be home at the start to give us access and at the end for the system walkthrough. You don’t need to stay home the entire day.

Will the price change once you see my house?

Your quote is flat-rate. If our on-site visit reveals something that wasn’t in the original scope, like damaged ductwork or an electrical upgrade required by code, we’ll explain it and price it in writing before doing any extra work. No surprise invoices.

Found a system you like? Let’s make sure it’s the right one.
